DetailsIn November of 1868, Custer attacked Cheyenne Chief, Black Kettle’s camp on the Washita River. Black Kettle’s sister was named Mahwissa. The battle over, with the women prisoners grouped together, not certain of their fate, Mahwissa took a young and very beautiful Cheyenne girl named Monahsetah, and presented her to Custer with a short informal marriage ceremony. Monahsetah was also Black Kettle’s niece. The print is a depiction of Monahsetah, the young Cheyenne girl, who was presented to Custer by Mahwissa as "Mahwissa's Gift".
